PIRACAIA

Piracaia is a municipality of tourist interest located in the interior of São Paulo state, just 90 km from the capital, situated in the Serra da Mantiqueira region. The city is known for its tourist vocation based on religious tourism, ecotourism, trout farming, and traditional handicrafts. Historical Description

Piracaia was founded on June 16, 1817, by Leonor de Oliveira Franco and her children, who donated land for the construction of a chapel in honor of Saint Anthony. The name Piracaia comes from Tupi and means 'Burnt Fish'. The city developed as an agricultural center and, later, as a tourist destination due to its natural features and religious heritage.

Cultural Description

The city is an important center for cultural tourism, with historic churches of national significance, housing rare works such as ceiling panels with portraits of popes found only in the Vatican and Piracaia. Local crafts are impressive, with a focus on handcrafted ceramics of international quality, macramé, and bamboo and woodwork.
