In 1864, the Chapel of Our Lady of Patronage was elevated to a parish. The name Igaratá, of Tupi-Guarani origin meaning 'canoes with high sides', designated the municipality in 1906. The construction of the Jaguari Dam in the 1970s transformed the landscape and the local economy, making Igaratá a center for nautical tourism.
Nautical tourism, ecotourism, and adventure tourism. The Jaguari Reservoir is the main attraction, offering fishing, diving, jet skiing, stand-up paddleboarding, and boat trips. Off-road trails, waterfalls, and Morro Azul (Blue Hill) complement the options.
