
The town was founded on May 22, 1705, by Bárbara Cardoso, widow of Domingos Lopez de Lima, who built a chapel in honor of Senhor Bom Jesus (Lord Good Jesus). Bárbara was a cousin of Fernão Dias Paes, who left her in the region during his last expedition. In 1869, the Brotherhood of Senhor Bom Jesus dos Perdões was created. The town was elevated to a parish in 1873 and became independent from Nazaré Paulista on February 18, 1959.

The city boasts waterfalls with natural pools, trails through the Atlantic Forest, viewpoints with panoramic views, and the historic Sanctuary, a center of pilgrimages. Highlights include the Barrocão Waterfall, the Pedra do Coração (Heart Stone), and the Camargos Viewpoint.
Take BR-381 (Rodovia Fernão Dias) to exit 36-A, then follow SP-065 (Rodovia Dom Pedro I) to exit 62. Approximate travel time: 1 hour and 4 minutes. There are buses departing from Tietê Terminal.
