
Mairiporã has indigenous roots; its name comes from the Tupi word 'Mairy-pora' (beautiful city). The region was inhabited by indigenous communities before the arrival of the Portuguese colonizers. The city developed around the Serra da Cantareira mountain range, becoming an important area for environmental preservation and ecotourism.
