Formerly São João do Curralinho, Joanópolis was founded in 1878 by residents who gathered around a large cross to celebrate Saint John the Baptist. With the development of coffee cultivation, it was elevated to a district in 1891 and to a municipality on August 17, 1895. The name Joanópolis, 'city of John', honors its patron saint. In 2001, it was elevated to the status of a Tourist Resort.
Capital of ecotourism and adventure tourism in the Bragantina region. It offers impressive waterfalls, trekking trails to rock formations over 1,700 meters high, water sports on the Jaguari-Jacareí Reservoir, and a rich rural culture with the legend of the Werewolf.
